Bucket o’ Bread

In order to appear less like a couple, Kyra and I joined up with our five fellow senior ladies to bask in our last few days/weeks of true caloric freedom, checking off another bucket lister at The Little Village.

The main attraction: BREAD.

And MORE BREAD.

We also had some entrees in there somewhere, but as I told Kyra before heading downto(w)n, it’s hard to remember anything else on the menu because… bread.

This braided decadency of dough, topped with parmesan cheese crumbles and roasted garlic is what a carb-lover’s dreams are made of.

Seriously, Kyra dreamed about it.

Thanks to a great group of senior Tigirls for for a fun evening. I loaf you all.

A good week

T’was a good week.

Skating on the River and The House of Blues Gospel Brunch have now been checked off the bucket list with much satisfaction.

 Brunch- delish. Music- awesome.  Skating- pure adolescent fun.

Seen and Heard at Zeeland Street Market

“There hasn’t been one bite that I haven’t loved.”

“All of my favorite things are on one plate.”

” So much meat!!!”

“Wow. Just. Wow.”

“Can I have some of your butter?”

So yeah… Our Zeeland lunch was amazing.

Kyra ordered the brisket plate and I had Momma’s pot roast.

Obviously we were quite satisfied with our authentic, southern, home-cooked, DELICIOUS meals.

It was nice to change it up a little bit and eat lunch at one of our favorite breakfast stops in the best neighborhood in BR.

I can’t say which menu I prefer, lunch or breakfast.  Plus I just heard that they are introducing to-go dinners for those of us who cant get enough of the Z.

So I guess this means we’ll just have to start eating there for every meal of the every day…

2-4-1 in MidTown

Let me preface this post with a fact: We live in the best part of Baton Rouge by far.

That little quadrangle between Perkins, Government, Acadian… and Perkins again (?) is just overflowing with unique things to do, and I’m super happy that this blog is forcing us to explore our neighborhood a little more.

In the past two weeks Kyra and I have enjoyed a disgusting amount of school work, but also two of our bucket list adventures! Both were located in the MidTown area, and both experiences were great successes.

Here’s a little tidbit about each of our adventures:

Wooh BB-Q!

This past Saturday, Kyra, two of our teammates, and I got in with the locals at Jay’s BB-Q on Government Street. Having lived in Baton Rouge my whole life, I grew up eating turkey sandwiches and mozzarella sticks before ballet class (I was such a healthy child) at my family’s favorite hole in the wall barbecue place. But in the 3 years I have been at LSU, and the 2 that I have lived in MidTown, I had yet to share this little secret with my friends. Saturday I finally got that chance, and Jay did not disappoint.

On the menu for our table were giant poyboys with perfectly-thin sliced turkey, curly-qs, the last helping of mac-and-cheese, BEANS, and that perfect barbecue sauce– Jay’s way, on the side.

It was simple, quick, and plain ole’ good.

“It” Girls

This night is going to be hard to top

Last Friday Kyra and I attended the most artsy and couple-y event we have probably gone to and it was just GREAT. September 27th marked the final installment of the Baton Rouge Gallery’s summer program Movie’s and Music on the Lawn. From May- September The Gallery aired silent films on an outdoor screen and set the films to a score preformed live by a local band. With our blankets packed, Kyra and I ventured to the lawn located in City Park off of Perkins Road, not knowing what to expect from the event…

Well that’s not 100 percent true. We were expecting to watch/be forced to watch that horrifying clown movie “It” and probably leave halfway through just so we could say we checked it off out bucket list. Thankfully we quickly found out that the “It” being shown was the 1927 romantic comedy starring Clara Bow and her hilarious friend Monty. I would like to say that I was embarrassed after I realized I was being a total doofus in front all of those hipsters who had to listen to me rant about clowns, but I wasn’t. I was too relieved.

After our initial fears were settled, we had  the best time watching the movie under the perfect pre-fall weather we were lucky to encounter that night. The free popcorn and gelato cart were obviously a plus as well.

Also, mad props to anyone who brought his or her significant other to this event. It was all so sweet and romantic. You would have earned major points in my book.

One thing that I took away from the movie was that the “It Girl,” Betty/ Clara Bow did not meet many of the standards we hold for It Girls of today. A few weeks before seeing the movie, I had actually read this article in Elle about It Girls. I learned that this movie actually popularized the phrase and it was quite the coincidence to see it shown a few weeks later… especially after all that clown mix up. Anyway, in the film Betty/Bow was deemed an “It Girl,” she possessed “it” or as the film described, “that quality possessed by some which draws all others with its magnetic force.”

Everyone wants to be an “it girl,” to some extent. But what we saw in this movie was that Betty/Bow didn’t really have “it” all together. She was kind of a maniac actually… But what I’m getting at here is that even though she was an “it girl,” she wasn’t the idealized, constantly cool, and elegant lady. She was a normal, working, funny, strange girl who was a good friend to her roommate and liked to climb on anchors in the middle of the ocean… “It” just got me thinking about “It.” There really isn’t a clear definition what it means to “draw others” or to be “it.” I think everyone has a little bit of “it” in them in someway. And everyone is an “it girl” to someone.

Me and my “It Girl” have been having the best time with this bucket list. We’ll keep exploring and reporting, you keep reading 🙂

Bleeblahblah, LaMeMe ( Beausoleil and Latte e Miele) and Conserving the Gluttony

Yay to us for actually doing something that we said we were going to! This bucket list thing rocks!

This weekend, KSkye and I checked off not one, but TWO items on our Bucket List. Shockingly they were both food related.

The first check came from a scrumptious dinner at Beausoleil with the “in-laws,” followed by some equally scrumptious gelatto from Latte e Miele that was conveniently located right next door.

**Neither of us are food critics ( I just started eating non-white food last year) so forgive me if this and subsequent food posts aren’t the most eloquent pieces of blog-erature you have ever read. Here is goes.**

Let me start by saying that in my mind the quality of a restaurant increases exponentially if there is bread provided for the table. My opinion of the restaurant continues to increase the more times the wait staff refills our bread basket, and it will increase even more if I don’t have to ask for said basket to be refilled. And don’t you worry, I will ask.

Given this information, one can assume that I was pretty stoked when we were welcomed to Beausoleil with 2 baskets of fried pork fat ( lol conserving the gluttony).

With visions of craklins dancing through our heads, we continued our meal with an order of shrimp and grits for the table to share. For me, the consistency of grits is a hard thing to get just right, but these were spot on. Plus with the hint of chorizo and chili butter (drool) , this appetizer was tres delicious.

At this point in the meal Mr. Brian was also chowing on some insane-looking- cheese-encrusted French Onion soup that I was eyeing. I’m definitely going to have to try that next time.

Next up was the main course. For this I ordered the pan roasted chicken breast with prosciutto wrapped asparagus and a citrus beurre blanc. Who am I ? Kyra ordered the grilled pork chop with caramelized cauliflower and Creole mustard glaze. It was massive.

Both meals were quite delicious and the atmosphere in the small, bustling restaurant was enjoyable. It was great to catch up with the Jones and talk about our future (jobs), past (ancestry.com) and our present (LSU football).

Our only regret was that we went to the restaurant the night before we had our weight circuit (really difficult training) and were conscious of this while ordering. If I had left the ordering up to my taste buds alone I probably would have gotten boudin, the mac and cheese with mushroom gravy, one of their rich fish dishes, or any of the fried foods being traipsed in front of my face all evening long. I am also very interested in trying their brunch menu, specifically for their chicken and waffles.

But, sacrifices are part of the game. And now we have even more incentive to go back one day and totally glutton it up!

To compensate for our lack of total gluttony we compromised with some gelatto for dessert at Latte e Miele.

I am so happy this eatery moved “into the city” and expanded their menu. Their new space is so chic and modern you will forget you’re on the middle of Jefferson Highway. Plus their gelatto is so so delicious. It was a great way to finish up a great night… and no one threw up during circuit. Yay!

Bucket List

Hey y’all!

If you haven’t noticed, I haven’t posted in a while, and I apologize for that.  I took a brief hiatus while school, swimming, and rush (gag me) got underway and now I am back with a vengeance, equipped with a new and I think rather exciting idea for the direction I want this blog go in.

If you are just joining me, so far this blog has been pretty much about random things that interest me or that I have done.

This summer, having lived in Houston for a bit and going on a few vacations, I had the luxury and time to experience lots of cool, new, and interesting things.

Now I am back to the grind in the good ole’ Baton Rouge for my senior year (WHAT?!).

Having lived in Baton Rouge my entire life I have become pretty accustomed to hearing phrases like “BR is seaux boring,” or “The only thing here is football.”

Now I’m not going to lie, I have probably said those exact words myself at one point in my life. I’m not going to pretend that Baton Rouge is anything like Chicago or Houston. But having observed my surroundings a little more closely these past few months I have realized that there are actually a lot of things to do down here in South Louisiana, a lot of Baton Rouge staples that I haven’t gotten around to seeing/eating/experiencing in my 21 years. There are also plenty of things I have done here that I would like to do again before I graduate and potentially leave Baton Rouge for a while.

So… I have decided that I am going to get up off the couch and see what’s out there.

 I created a bucket list with my BFF, roommate,  and fellow senior Kyra Jones.  We want to use this list to ensure that we get the most out of our last year in the Red Stick, to challenge us to try new things, to provide us with a small relief from our often monotonous schedules as collegiate student athletes, to make us stop eating at the same college town restaurants for every meal, stop going to the same seedy bars every single night out,  and to encourage us to truly take in the culture that BRLA and the surrounding areas are overflowing with.

The list isn’t too long. It isn’t too short. We think it is actually achievable in 8 months time.

Each time we check something off the bucket list ( and we have made some progress already) I will post about it on this here blog! If I find something else that I thought was bucket list worthy I will post it here as well.

If I start slacking, all of you 25 followers better hold me accountable!

Weekend Update: Farewell Houston

All things must come to an end and it looks like my time in Houston has done just that.

This past weekend marked my final weekend in H-Town. Accordingly, I soaked up as much of the city as a could. The escapades would be a lot to compress into one post, nor can I find a common theme to center the post around so I’m going to do the thing I do best and make a list!

Top 5 Things About My Farewell to Houston Weekend

1. Renee

My wonderful mother came to help me pack up my apartment and also to take advantage of the holiday weekend sales. Things are pretty much automatically better when Renee is around… at least for me, and this weekend was a testament to that. I was able to show some off my favorite places in the city- Picnic, Bikhram’s Yoga, the Rice Running Trails– and it made me feel super grown up as I directed her through the streets of Houston (even if we did get lost once). She also brought the big bucks and we tackled  some of the big Houston shopping areas, which brings me to point number…

2. Tootsies

Tootsies, Tootsies, Tootsies. What can I even say about Tootsies? It was an overwhelming fashion experience in the best way possible. I got to see J Mendel dresses up close and personal and decided (as if there was any doubt) that I would wear any article of clothing the line ever produced. I also purchased my very first Nanette Lepore piece with this here blazer!!!, something I have been waiting to do since Carrie Bradshaw opened that giant box in SATC The Movie. Annnnd the work or art was on sale so I was actally saving money by purchasing a neon pink blazer! That’s how it works right?

Also shout out to our girl Leslie. Not only did you look like Karen Walker from Will and Grace, but you were super helpful and thanks for complimenting my eyes 😉

3. Goode Company Seafood

After trying on clothes that would only look good on a model, the next healthy step is devouring a ginormous meal, yes? Yes. Yes it is.

After the shops, Neners and I joined up with some of our Houston family at another Houston family’s famous seafood restaurant. Though the atmosphere was casual… Like streetcar casual if that’s a thing… our dinner warranted five-star glowing stars. I ordered the flounder special with lemon glaze and jumbo lump crab meat on top (yum) with an avocado ranch side salad that was more that worth mentioning. Seriously, those pecans in there- amazing.

4. Couching*

This weekend I also achieved my goal of sleeping on my friends’ couch at least once a week while I was in Houston. Ok, so it actually wasn’t a real goal of mine, but nevertheless I’m glad I did it for the following reasons (this list bout to get rul serious):

a) Sleeping on that couch suggests that I had a fun night with friends

b) It is honestly the best couch I know, I can only think of two couches that compare, and if you get the pillows just right it’s comfier than any fancy bed.

5. Star Pizza

For the first time this weekend I tried the Houston landmark pizza joint Star Pizza. The Chicago style deep dish pizzas were/ are mouth watering as exemplified by the fact that my mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. Though a little pricy compared to what I’m used to in the good ole BR, a small pizza served as two meals and was perfect for latenighting prior to my couching successes.

Thanks again Houston for another awesome weekend. I’m gonna miss ya like crazee.

Microwave Meal

Well doesn’t that look nice?!

My apartment in Houston doesn’t have an oven or stove top, so for health and monetary reasons I have been attempting to make dinner for myself using the few appliances I have. Tonight was my first success!

I am by no means a foody ( I only started eating non-white foods recently) and do not possess any natural ability in the kitchen. I also am not a big fan of microwaveable-tv-dinner- like-packages. But, today during my lunch break I found some easy options that even the biggest klutz like me was able to figure out!

The meal took about 20 minutes to make, and to my surprise was quite tasty and pretty healthy!

I also learned that the amount of cheese you add to a meal directly increases your chance of success.

The only problem was that after my long workout today, I was still a tad bit hungry after the dinner; but it was nothing a little dessert couldn’t help 🙂

MICROWAVE MEAL

-1 baked potato-About 10 minutes

-1 Morning Star Spicy Bean Burger- 2 minutes (good source of protein and veggies)

-1/2 a bag of Green Giant Microwavable Asparagus tips ( added a little butter and Tony’s) -6 minutes

Weekend Update

This weekend was full of food and babies. So it was p. d. good.

The most momentous part of my weekend occurred Friday when I ate the best sandwich of my life.

Yes. The best.

My little piece of Heaven came from Picnic, a small bakery near Rice University that specializes in breads, box lunches, and apparently perfect slices of pickles.

Seriously, yall. It was amazing. I ordered the Roasted Turkey sandwich and was near tears after my first taste. I savored the last bite for as long as I could, cutting it into smaller and smaller halves until I was forced to come to terms with the fact that the sandwich was finished. Then I ate the perfect pickle while simultaneously SnapChatting.

Other notable food experiences were had at the new Torhcy’s Tacos in Rice Village (where the signage above was found) and Good Company Taqueria.

Don’t judge. I’m in Texas.

And to add a little cherry on top I was eating all of this deliciousness while getting to spend time with my adorable second-twice-removed-something-or-other genius cousins.
